At First Sight - with Spacey Jane

Spacey Jane - Kieran

Interviewer: Tom Heenan

Has there been a band that you’ve played with and just thought, geez, I’m playing with a superstar?

There’s been a couple! I think supporting Car Seat Headrest was the first time we’d played with an international band we really loved, and it was without a doubt one of our favourite shows ever.

How’d the band get to where it is today? What was the first high and what happened from there?

I think the first high was the first show we ever played, a house party gig in Caleb’s backyard. The ball has seemingly just rolled on from there, and since we’ve always loved putting on our own shows more than any other.

How do you go about writing your songs?

Typically, Caleb will come to us with a chord progression, an idea or a fully-fledged song from a guitar/vox perspective. It’s then just up to us to finish the rest of the parts off.

How’d you come up with the idea for the video clip for keep a clean nose?

That was actually George Foster’s idea! He wrote/directed/filmed the clip out at Caleb’s parents place in the hills.

If there was one song that another band has done that you could pawn off as your own, what would it be?

Caleb has a really good one for this: Wilco – Dawned on Me, “Growing up listening to Wilco taught me to appreciate the beauty of simplicity and honesty in songwriting. This song encapsulates that idea pretty well.”

Who were your influences growing up?

We’ve all grown up listening to slightly different stuff, but mostly leaning toward guitar-led rock music. Think The Strokes, Wilco, Radiohead, The Smiths and so on. Ashton has a flair for the old-school too: Steppenwolf, Nick Drake, The Doors. A bit of a melting pot,

How did you start the band?

Caleb and I played together in high school (did a Temper Trap cover together once) and when we both ended up in Perth we wanted to play again. I ran into Ashton at a uni event, and he’d met Amelia through French class and a mutual respect for RHCP. It pretty much rolled on from there. I think it took us a good 2 months of rehearsing before we played our first gig in Caleb’s backyard.

What’s the weirdest thing that someone at one of your shows has done?

We’ve had our fair share of stage invaders/divers and it’s always a bit how ya goin’. Really though, we’re playing indie-rock over here, nothing super rowdy. I can respect a good stage dive in the right context, but a Spacey Jane show definitely isn’t that.

Obviously, you would get recognized a fair bit on the street, how did it feel when you were first recognized by a random person?

The first time we were together and were recognised it was pretty awesome. We’d just released our first EP and were having lunch at a café in freo when a stranger told us they loved it! It was a great feeling and honestly that hasn’t changed much. It’s nice to be noticed and made to feel appreciated for our music, and it’s not happening so often that it inconveniences us in any way. Overall, 10/10 feeling.
