Murdoch Radio Initiative
Murdoch University’s Campus Radio course is facing the challenge of broadcasting during the Covid-19 pandemic, by continuing their planned shows on Radio Fremantle in April, 2020.
With show names like "Going Sane", "Phresh As Fridays", "The Antidote" and "Locked Down", Murdoch Radio is embracing the uncertain times and presenting chill tune sessions, chatty segments and engaging community outreach.
With every show the students additionally involve their audiences through social media, developing branding and promotions, as well as the day-to-day business of presenting, producing and editing show content.
This is done by putting student safety first as many schools are, with remote networking, recording segments and online interviews, which are then delivered for broadcasting every weekday.
Dr Simon Order, Senior Lecturer and Academic Chair for Sound and Radio at Murdoch, says that many broadcasters are adapting and getting on air as usual and Murdoch’s M.R FM is simply doing the same.
“After all, if it's good enough for radio hosts and podcasters everywhere, it's good enough for students to try their hand at working under the same kinds of pressures that are facing broadcasters worldwide!
It’s also following in the footsteps of radio education and remote/rural community broadcasting - a service that has connected us for generations and has come back into vogue during a time of need.”
Some brainstormed discussion segments for radio shows have been made available for anyone’s use at www.facebook.com/murdochrfm, inspired by the collegial efforts at Community Radio COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Response on Facebook [PDF Copy Attached].
M.R FM’s shows can be heard on the drive time slot on Radio Fremantle 107.9fm from 3-5pm in Western Australia, 90.7fm in Melbourne, SYN on digital radio and around the world via syn.org.au, from 20th April - 29th May.
